Project Update Bulletin 14

This project update bulletin provides the latest progress on the construction of Gloucestershire’s Energy from Waste facility.

The project successfully achieved a notable milestone this week. The 70 metre tall chimney stack was safely delivered and erected on site for the Gloucestershire Energy from Waste facility. The stack arrived in three sections over the weekend 7th/8th April. A standard design component for all Energy from Waste facilities, the stack is used to disperse the treated gases generated from waste combustion to ensure that emissions are well within the limits set by legislation through the Environmental Permit issued by the Environment Agency.

All the emissions that pass through the stack will be rigorously monitored by Urbaser Balfour Beatty and the Environment Agency, and the data will be made available. Other major plant and machinery items that have been recently installed include storage silos for lime and activated carbon, which will be used in the flue gas treatment process, and the turbine and electricity generator, which will produce electricity from the energy, released from waste combustion.

The project is still on track to complete in time for a summer 2019 hand over.

The Gloucestershire Energy from Waste facility is part of Gloucestershire’s Joint Municipal Waste Management Strategy which aims to reduce, recycle and recover waste materials across the county and to move away from reliance on end-of-life landfill.
