Gloucestershire Energy from Waste Facility announces first-ever open day

  • The Gloucestershire Energy from Waste Facility’s first open day will take place on Saturday, 26th March 2022 at Javelin Park.

  • Attendees will gain insight into the energy from waste process and will be able to see first-hand how the Facility operates.

  • The Facility’s first open day was originally planned to take place in 2020, but was postponed due to the subsequent lockdowns.

Today, the Gloucestershire Energy from Waste Facility has announced that its first-ever open day will take place on Saturday 26th March 2022 at Javelin Park, giving attendees the chance to learn about what happens on-site and how it generates enough electricity to power the equivalent of around 25,000 homes across Gloucestershire. During the three one-hour sessions, taking place at 10 am, 11:30 am and 1 pm, visitors will be able to view the official Facility film, detailing the energy from waste process, as well as see first-hand the various plant and equipment on-site including, waste cranes, combustion grate and stack. Early pre-booking through the portal on the Site Tours and Visitor Centre page on the Facility’s website is recommended to avoid disappointment*.

The open day is intended for small groups, including families, couples and friends as each slot will have a maximum of 15 people. For bookings larger than 10 people, it is advised to contact the Visitor Centre to arrange a group visit for an alternative date in the future. For those who are unable to make this event, there will be another open day in autumn this year at a date that will be confirmed by the Facility in due course.

The Facility’s first open day was originally planned to take place in 2020, however, it was postponed due to the COVID-19 lockdowns. During this period, the Facility continued to inform people about the energy from waste process via virtual presentations, which are still available for groups who cannot visit the Facility in person. To ensure that visiting is safe for all, the Facility will ask attendees to have their temperature measured via a no-touch thermometer and to sign in to the visitor's book upon arrival. People that are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 are kindly asked to not attend the event.

Dan Pearson, General Manager, said:

“Alongside treating the county’s waste, the Gloucestershire Energy from Waste Facility has a responsibility to help educate local people about the recovery process. We look forward to hosting the first of many open days having been restricted from doing so earlier due to the COVID-19 lockdowns. If you have an interest in sustainable waste management, we implore you to come down to the Facility and learn about the benefits of energy from waste.”

Earlier this month, the Facility announced that its Visitor Centre would reopen for new bookings from May 2022, after prioritising people who had their visits cancelled due to the COVID-19 lockdowns. Visits allow schools, colleges, community and other interest groups access to free educational tours, courses and workshops on the waste hierarchy, climate change and sustainability.
