Gloucestershire Energy from Waste Facility announces 2023 art competition

  • The Gloucestershire Energy from Waste Facility has launched its latest art competition.

  • The theme for entries is ‘Plastic Reduction’ and entries could, for example, illustrate the continued impact on the environment of creating plastic waste, present alternatives to plastic use, or include innovative examples of repurposing plastic waste.

  • Entrants are free to use any medium of their choice to create entries which could include a painting, a poster, a photograph, a model, a TikTok video, or an Instagram Reel.

  • Two winners will have their artwork exhibited in the Facility’s Visitor Centre or via the Facebook Group and will receive a personal tour of the site and £50 in vouchers.

Today, (30th November 2023) the Gloucestershire Energy from Waste Facility has announced its latest art competition giving two Gloucestershire residents, one between the ages of 7 and 18, and one adult, the opportunity to win a personal tour of the site as well as £50 in vouchers. This year’s theme is ‘Plastic Reduction’ and entrants could present, for example, illustrations of the continued impact on the environment of creating plastic waste, alternatives to plastic use, or innovative examples of repurposing plastic waste. The competition is supporting Gloucestershire Recycles’ ‘Plastic-Free Festivities’ campaign, which encourages Gloucestershire residents to reduce the amount of plastic they use over the Christmas period.

Entrants are free to use any medium of their choice to create their artistic interpretation of the theme – meaning there are more ways to get involved than ever before. More traditional forms of artwork will be judged against modern, digital entries and could include, for example, a picture or poster that illustrates simple swaps for plastics in everyday scenarios, a photograph that captures the negative impact of plastic waste in nature, an inventive working model of repurposing plastic waste for use around the house, or a short, hard-hitting TikTok video campaigning for a reduction in the use of plastic packaging. Options for entry are limitless – the more creative the better!

Based on what the Facility considers to be the most imaginative and unique entries, a selection of the finest artworks, including the winners’ creations, will be displayed in the Facility’s Visitor Centre, on the website and on the Facility’s Facebook Group. This competition is open to all Gloucestershire schools, as well as members of the community. The prize allows the winners to visit areas of the Facility that are not typically viewable during regular week-day tours due to operational reasons.

The competition will run for 6 weeks and will close on Friday 12th January with the winning entries also to be revealed by mid-February 2024. The winners will be allowed to take up to three other people with them on the tour which will be arranged for a convenient available date.

Dan Pearson, General Manager, commented:

“After the success of last year’s art competition, we wanted to host another to see the creative talent here in Gloucestershire whilst also raising awareness of sustainable waste management. With tours fully booked up a year ahead, this is one of the only other opportunities to see the Facility within the next 12 months so get involved and share your entries with us!”

Entrants must complete the entry form and send a digital copy (video, photo or image) of their chosen artwork to mdelatorre@urbaser.co.uk. As entries will be viewable on-site, on the Facility’s website and on the Facebook Group, entrants are asked to confirm they are happy for the Facility to showcase their art. Please see the terms and conditions and the entry form before entering.
